Hawk and Owl Evenings

These evenings will include a talk and slide show, live birds of prey and, weather permitting, conducted Owl Prowls in the grounds. There are three varieties of owl on the Acton Court site and these are often (though not guaranteed) to be seen or heard in the evenings.

Sunday 16 July

Chant in Tudor England

Come and sing at Acton Court. A workshop led by John Rowlands-Pritchard, director of the highly respected English singing group, Opus Anglicanum. An enjoyable day learning about church and monastic chant sung in England on the eve of the Reformation. The chants will be based on the works of John Skelton, Tudor priest and poet laureate. Open to everyone (whatever your vocal abilities!)

The Tudors and Iron Acton:
A Talk By David Starkey

Broadcaster and historian, David Starkey is a leading expert in the Tudor period. He knows Acton Court well and has used it as a location for a number of his television programmes, most recently Monarchy. Dr Starkey will speak about the part Acton Court and important local families of the day played in Tudor history.

The Tudor Tailor

From the authors of The Tudor Tailor – Reconstructing 16th Century Dress, these two workshops will demonstrate Tudor Tailoring techniques, long forgotten ways of decorating fabrics and offer the opportunity to handle reconstructed items. Find out how many layers it took for a courtier to achieve the fashionable look and how ordinary working people acquired their clothes and coped with the practicalities of life.
